It seems from other responses (Jonathan's in particular) that I am
incorrect.
 
I was sure that when I had first come across it I had looked it up and found
that definition. However subsequent searches (on and off line) have produced
no results other than the ones you refer to, so the chances are that I
looked up xian rather than xan. Close though!

Which means the  original question remains unanswered :-(
