I don't know the arch tomcat packages but I know the one used by RedHat/Fedora
which has the sample apps in sub packages. So do our own inhouse RPMs. Why not
ask the arch maintainers to split the package accordingly?
(Yes, that's on my list, but) It would help on ArchLinux, but not any
other (current or future) distro, not any new user who accidentally
unzips a new version in place, etc.
The suggestion isn't high-urgency, but would simply default to the less
risky mode of operation+updates going into the future. That's my whole
point.
It certainly /can/ be fixed for and by /any and every/ downstream user.
But separating the concerns of core/optional/demo
(tomcat/manager/examples+ROOT) would be a clean split IMHO, taking some
of the burden to do it right off of downstream users and distros.
