Wouldn't it be better to write this as 0.10 $/L rather than $0.10/liter.

My suggestion is based on:

+   The symbol '$' is a well known and accepted unit symbol for the quantity
'money'.

+   The symbol '$' has no special features, as a unit symbol, that mean it
should be placed before its numerical value - except perhaps on a cheque or
in a contract - and neither of these occasions apply here.

+   The symbol '$' can be very useful (and save a lot of confusion and ink)
when it is used for large sums of money, for example 2 M$ is a lot shorter
and simpler than $2mill or any other randomly generated abbreviation.
