There is the Bible, and there is the common usage.

Meter squared is commonly understood and used for areas up to 10 000 m2
Hectare is commonly understood and used for areas between 10 000 and 
10 000 000 m2 (1 to 1000 hectares)
For larger areas squared kilometers is commonly understood and used.
