The house of Lords is there as a check. When a government has a massive
majority it is handy to have the Lords available to act as a check.
It's interesting you should say that. You seem to acknowledge that will of
the people isn't always to be trusted - except when it goes against
metricatin of course.
To be honest, The debate about the Lords is not a big issue with me -
although I still feel Blair's use of the parliament act to force things
through when he has a huge majority is a cheeky way of using "emergency
legislation".
Having said that - now his majority is less than 70. :-)
Personally, while we don't have direct democracy like the Swiss I prefer the
best of a bad bunch - and that's the parliamentary system.
BTW - you mention "except when it goes against metricatin of course." - do
you have evidence that the majority of the commons, lords or both actually
want metric enforcement? You may be thinking about the wrong bunch of
people ;-)
