I'm an anesthesiologist, so I deal with patients' weights and weight-based medication dosing every day. You're absolutely right, no one calls it "mass." If I had a patient insist on calling it "mass," we'd end up having an interesting conversation and I'd oblige, but I won't change my practice. All the docs have taken a combined 3 years of physics and chemistry in college, so we do understand the distinction between mass and weight.
Interestingly enough, once in a while we do get patients who will state their weight in kilograms. The are for the most part the unfortunate folks who have a chronic condition and have been exposed to the healthcare system long enough to realize that nearly everything under the hood is metric. Moments like these are always a reminder that in the US, weights and measures are part of the inscrutable medical jargon. It shouldn't have to be this way.
