I am an engineer. I teach at a school with a high number of future military people, and so I teach in metric. Some one always comes up and says – I like us customary units and I look at them and say – the Corp guys get to fight and die in metric – I teach metric for them . All the docs have taken a combined 3 years of physics and chemistry in college, so we do understand the distinction between mass and weight. Interestingly enough, once in a while we do get patients who will state their weight in kilograms. The are for the most part the unfortunate folks who have a chronic condition and have been exposed to the healthcare system long enough to realize that nearly everything under the hood is metric. Moments like these are always a reminder that in the US, weights and measures are part of the inscrutable medical jargon. It shouldn't have to be this way.
