Has anybody ever got any sort of score-writing (MIDI) program working under Linux?
I've tried Planet CCRMA's apt-get distributions for Red Hat 9, and so far have come up unsuccessful. To make a long story short, a) I want a program that has the ability to edit a musical score interactively, and easy play back functionality. (This is what I was using under Windows: http://www.noteworthysoftware.com/composer/screenshot.htm ) I'm running Red Hat 9, and have a Sound Blaster Live (value) sound card. b) I tried downloading RPMs of Rosegarden from Planet CCRMA ... (http://www.all-day-breakfast.com/rosegarden/) and went through this scenario: 1) crashes on startup 2) turns out it crashes because it can't find a midi sequencer--by default the sound card only has wav playback capability under linux, not midi (the snd-seq kernel module) 3) tried various fixes suggested on the internet, including trying a different kernel and using ALSA sound drivers ... as long as I have the snd-seq kernel module installed, rosegarden will run properly, but when I try to play anything, nothing comes out of my speakers. 4) downloaded timidity, which plays midi files through /dev/dsp as opposed to the snd-seq kernel module using its own special conversion thing. Timidity plays midi files perfectly, and also has a "server" mode (timidity -iA) which other programs like rosegarden can use instead of the onboard midi capabilities of the sound card. I tried that, and although the command-line timidity will play midi files fine, and rosegarden seems to find the server-mode timidity fine, it /appears/ to be playing but in fact, again, nothing comes out of the speakers. Any suggestions? tia, ~ ross -- This sentence would be seven words long if it were six words shorter. ____________________ BYU Unix Users Group http://uug.byu.edu/ ___________________________________________________________________ List Info: http://uug.byu.edu/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/uug-list
