I don't think the alsa drivers were ever "properly" installed ... I
installed all the RPMs, but nothing was ever muted, despite all my
modprobing attempts. mp3s etc. still played properly, but no results from
the midi attempts.

Trying alsamixer or amixer merely gives me these errors:

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device

amixer: Mixer attach default error: No such device

But the kernel modules are all there:

snd-seq 47504 0 (autoclean)
snd-timer 19876 0 (autoclean) [snd-seq]
snd-seq-device 6284 0 (autoclean) [snd-seq]
snd-mixer-oss 16176 0 (autoclean) (unused)
snd 46244 0 (autoclean) [snd-seq snd-timer
snd-seq-device snd-mixer-oss]
emu10k1 68360 0 (autoclean)
ac97_codec 14536 0 (autoclean) [emu10k1]
sound 73492 0 (autoclean) [emu10k1]
soundcore 6500 7 (autoclean) [snd emu10k1 sound]
