Hans will be able to clarify this further but I'll to explain what's going on here.
Ok there's no 'midi' channel in your sound card so you need something to translate the midi information into sound bites before it can go to your external speakers. Or you can send the Midi information itself to an external midi device (like a piano). so the easiest way to do this is to setup up some sort of inbetween from the rosegarden to your sound card. To be honest, I have yeat to really figure this out. It's one of the more frustrating things of Rosegarden. The best thing to try would be JACK. it's the new Low latency server for Linux audio. I'll take a look at it too and let you know what's going on. If you're just looking at notating some music check out denemo and lilypond.
