So, long story short and back to my original question...anyone here jump
straight into linux, or is it pretty standard to merge your linux on the
desktop use over a period of time?

Over a period of time (~2 yrs.)

I dual booted OSX and Linux from 2003 through 2005. Depending on the
month, I'd run Linux more than OSX or vice-versa. Then I sold my
iBook, bought a used PC, and have been Linux 'only' since September or
so last year. I say 'only' because my wife still has an OSX machine,
and I have a windows box arround for testing.

Neither OSX nor Windows interest me now. I don't mind using OSX, but
it's no Linux.
