Well, when I came to my first semester off my mission, my CS142 class
used the linux labs exclusively. This was my first experience with it.
I decided that I had better learn linux and so went to an installfest
with my compaq laptop. I was there all day getting help in installing
Fedora Core (I think it was 2). It never really worked, no wireless, no
sound, and bad video. Pretty much didn't work.

But I guess I was obstinate, as I tried out knoppix on the laptop to see
if somethings could work. Knoppix had sound and video. So, I tried to
install Knoppix but that failed. I heard about Gentoo and how it might
work so I decided to try that (yeah, I really jumped into the deep end).
Gentoo actually allowed me to get everything working and was great, but
was irritating my wife (as I was constantly on the laptop :).

During this entire time, I discovered that my laptop is known to not
work with Linux very nicely. I found websites and mailing lists
dedicated to this model. Also, I only used Windows for games. I really
immersed myself.

I now barely use that laptop as it's screen is physically broken. I
have a desktop that I found in the dump (or at least on the way to the
dump) and compared to my laptop, it is extremely easy to handle. I run
ubuntu on this machine and am very pleased with it.
