Stan, I thought you might be interested. This weekend I indulged myself. On
saturday morning I went down to a local dyno shop (Dynojet-150). Asked him to
do power runs. Peak power was 112hp. This is a bike with 13,500miles on it from
new, a Mark's 4-2-2 exhaust and absolutely stock needles and jets. I did the
first dyno run with .025" shims under needles but the power was identical with
or without and if anything was definitely rich with the shims, which I already
knew.
The guy told me that the other V-Maxes he has tested all made a little more
power than mine even with stock pipes.(about 115-118). He did however comment
on the power curve being smoother and "dip-less" compared to the others. I saw
this myself when he screened the runs and overlayed them. I know I should have
dynoed first with the OEM pipes but Mark's pipe sounds so nice I don't give a
damn.
Sunday morning I went out to our local strip, they had a street car meeting
where bikes are also allowed.
The conditions were about 83 degrees F. with 35% humidity, and a reasonably
high barometer (29.90") The density altitude was about 1500ft.
I left everything on the bike the way I ride it on the street, including
mirrors, factory backrest and luggage rack, my T-Bag roll bag full of sun
cream, cell phone, water bottle and a few tools. It weighs about 15lbs. I'm too
lazy to remove stuff.
First run: 11.549, 1.839-60ft., 4.839-330ft, 7.434-660ft, 97.30mph-660ft
9.650-1000ft, ET-11.549@ 118.56mph.
Second run: Launched too high rpm (was only about 4000), the bike went skyward
and I had to get off it, shift up and run 11.954 @119.18mph.
Third run: probably the best, but the idiots timing equipment malfunctioned and
there were no times or speeds recorded. I believe it would have been only
marginally quicker than run #1, maybe an 11.50 or high 11.4.
The time was getting on so I had to head for home as it's an hour and 15 minute
ride to home. It was my wifes birthday and I told her I'd be home lunch time, I
made it and Max still has his clutch and the engine is still alive and well. I
shifted right on the 9500 mark most times.
By the way I didn't alter tyre pressures from the street settings I use 36psi
on the OEM front Dunlop Qualifier and 38psi on a 3/4 worn Avon AM-18 Super
Venom 150/90V-15 rear. I also did NO burnouts as the track surface was killer
for hook. Turning the tyres was not even an issue. I did as I always do on race
days with our cars, walk the track and push the start line rubber with my
thumb. There's no substitute for experience, I knew all was o.k. Now if I had
some wheelie bars I would have had a ball.
Basically I wanted to see what time I could do at will anytime in full street
trim, frankly it is what I expected. Yes with some more runs I believe an
average of about 11.2-11.3 is totally feasible with good launches. But the
first run was done exactly the way I ride at a set of lights on the street,
leave at idle with only mild clutch slip and hard on the throttle a split
second later.
As an interesting sidenote I raced a stock HayaBussss on the first pass his
numbers are as follows: 2.011-60ft, 4.913-330ft, 7.163-660ft, 110.28mph-660ft,
9.091-1000ft, 10.724 ET@ 138.10mph. If you look closely he really only hauled
me in by just before 1/2 track. True a better rider would have maybe done me in
sooner, but they are not that easy for the average rider to get off the line
smoothly without climbing skywards. He was not all that bad but didn't improve
on several successive runs I saw. He's the more typical street rider I believe.
In fact he's probably better than most.
Well I finally raced Max, that was the first time in 22 years I raced a bike at
the strip, it was fun! But I need my Cutlass, its 7 sec. passes are medicinal
nessesities for my well being.
