----- TC below brings up the subject of a flat-plane air filter. It is
doable and the cost is not much. I have a Venture which I am converting to
Max specs. The air box in the Venture is smaller than the Max's, but is
somewhat similar in that there is a vertical air filter and air horns. The
space requirements in the Venture air box results in shorter air horns,
which are not as advantageous to mid-range torque as the Max's longer air
horns.
I visited a local auto store with the air box lid in hand and test fitted
flat auto air filters until I found one that fit. The filter that fits the
Venture is off an '83 Ford Tempo.
I gutted the inside of the air box and pop-riveted 1/2 inch "L-Shaped"
aluminum extrusions horizonatally along the four vertical walls of airbox,
thus forming a "shelf" around all four sides of the air box. The air filter
fits perfectly, and I have installed foam rubber weatherstripping along the
sides so as to make a friction fit for the air filter.
Head space above the air horns is important. I think you need a minimum of
1.5", the more the better. This may cause a need to raise the airbox on the
airhorns. There is a bit of space between the top of the air box and the
fake tank cover.
There is yet another variation, which I am pursuing at this moment. I am
using the longer Max air horns for increased mid-range torque, and have the
airbox raised on the air horns so that they just protrude inside the airbox.
Now, I will not be able to install my fake tank cover. I will cut a hole in
it and push the air box up through the hole into comparatively cold air.
Then I will figure out some small air scoop and install it over the hole.
