Neal,
I only ran 'Supreme' 93 octane gas in my Max because I mistakenly
interpreted the fuel label (wherever it is), and was under the impression
the motor had a higher compression ratio than it really does... (Don't ask
me why, I can't seem to find my service manual since evacuating from
hurricane Floyd last year)
In any case, I switched to regular unleaded gasoline last fall because The
List members described some of the effects that may be associated with
running a higher octane fuel than is required.
Amazingly, my bike seems to run better AND START EASIER on the lower octane
fuel! I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't try it myself. I've only
burned 5-6 tanks so far, and haven't hit the hot, humid, summer months, but
I think I'll stick with the lower octane fuel.
I think the theory behind that is that higher octane gas actually has a
lower flashpoint - hence the resistance to high compression detonation -
which results in a quicker starting, faster burn
Check out one of the 'octane' sites on the Web for more details...
Good Luck,

<snip> I only put
Chevron Supreme in the bike so I'm assuming it's not a gasoline
quality
issue either.
