Sat Tara,
I haven't noticed, (heard), any detonation but after first trying this
out with regular gas, (and I was listening ... believe me ... ), ...
inspection of the plugs did reveal that this could be a problem. I had
a good tune and nice color on the plugs etc ... and after an 80 mile
test run with the switch on all the time I returned to find the plugs
bone white and even some flecks fused to the plug insulators. While
this is an indication of being extremely lean, (no wonder you get
better gas economy .. right ??), I didn't care for seeing part of my
pistons relocating to the spark plugs. Soooooo ... I have richened my
tune considerably and am doing additional testing and keeping a close
eye on what is going on. The full throttle take off difference is
noticeable, (too me .. ), but it is hard to be completely objective
and how good is "seat of the pants" evaluation anyhow ... so obviously
... more definitive testing needs to be done. I personally think ...
that this modification would be of greatest value at lower RPM
operation ... as "rule of the thumb" says about 35 degrees of advance
should give you maximum power at top RPM anyhow ... and the Vmax will
give you about 32-33 degrees even if you completely defeat the sensor
input to the ignition controller. But this was a cheap and dirty way
to manipulate the output voltage of the sensor without damaging it and
provided me an opportunity to play with higher octane fuel and
possibly be able to gain something by it's use. My experience in the
past with higher octane fuel, (like in the 100-108 range ... that you
get at the track), is that you would lose power and it appeared to
demonstrate that most profoundly in the 0-60' times, (the only segment
where you are operating below 7500 RPM ... and this was a big shock to
me). Putting this on a switch and retaining the ability to rip the
whole deal out should I decide to do so in the future, (without having
to damage or cut my wiring harness), made this an irresistible toy to
play with for a while.
regards,
campbell
