Steve,
No tricks .. just the usual stuff ... I put DJ150s in for the
secondary pilot air jets and moved the needles out a 1/2 clip
position, (a washer), and then after the next test ride I moved it out
to the next whole position, (I have used this combo before and ran too
rich). I didn't change the mains ... Finally, everything was getting a
little on the dark side, (as I expected) ... and I was going to back
off a little on the air jets but last check things looked OK ... nice
tan and no specks .... I have been having a little problem with the
pilots anyhow ... and that was why I was really spring cleaning the
carbs last week. I can blow them out and the plugs go to the dark side
.. then after about a week things start to lighten up again ... so I
just ordered today some larger pilot fuel jets, 42.5 ... I got the
part number from Tyler, (who pointed out that the larger jets were
standard on non-Vboost bikes anyhow), 4G0-14142-42-A0 .... of course
he didn't give me the "A0" just to see me breath harder .... anyhow
... the suffix is "42-A0" for 42.5 or "40-A0" for 40.0s ... etc ....
and I just punched the numbers in manually at HLSM. I am sure raising
the needles and cranking the mixture screws out another 1/2 turn or so
would have done the trick. My pilot problem was just another issue
that was confusing the testing .... and when the pilots are freshly
cleaned the bike is exceptional on the low end and off idle ... So the
only reason I am fooling with these are to see if I can get out of the
routine of having to blast them every couple of weeks, (and of course
.. this is always a problem here as it gets warmer and it has been in
the 90s for a while now).

This is no biggie .. but if you are going to fool with this you simply
need to keep an eye on things ... I don't know about precise !! What
amazed me was the week before last ... I was out all day, (Arizona
bike week), and had the switch on all day ... The bike was running
nice and cool and it was running exceptionally well ... (leaping small
buildings etc) ... then towards the end of the day I noticed it was
getting weaker on take offs and a little jittery on light throttle ...
that is when I pulled the plugs and noticed that it was going
exceptionally lean. So I guess John Gainey at PCW is right ... real
world HP is really just this side of being too lean ... because it was
certainly making an exception of itself on that day .... and so last
week I ordered and changed the rear tire that got burn off the week
before, (they should last more than 3500 miles right ??!?) ... sigh
... all these roadblocks ....
