sorry i took so long to post my though i had worked on an 85 with similar 
problem it drove me nuts !!!!!!!! did you check the side stand switch that 
was the problem on mine  plug a continuity meter to the switch and play with 
the side stand  for a while mine worked good for a while then it crapped out 
!!!!!!!!!! changed the switch and the bike worked grate good luck aloha Tony p
