It's a pure Russian Domestic Ural B-10. I wanted a ride for my dog so I
was thinking about getting a sidecar for the Max. I then thought that a
Ural might be fun. I asked on the VMax list and "Hacksaw" noted that the
Ural was the motorcycle equivalent of the Yugo! Soon after I found this one
advertised in the Atlanta paper with 12Km on the clock. It had been in
storage in Macon since 1994. I was able to get it running and it has been
an absolute joy. 1938 technology at its best! I can set the valves in
under 10 minutes and synchronize the carbs in under two. It comes with a
tool kit that is adequate for a complete engine tear down. The spare fits
on all wheels and it even comes with an air pump!! I guess in Siberia you
just can't be too careful. Ironically when I shared the Yugo analogy with
members of the Ural list, the first response was, "You know, the Yugo was a
very underrated car." This was followed by tons of messages extolling fond
memories of Yugo experiences.
The Ural group is going to the Bonneville Salt Flats this October to nab
a class land speed record. We think we can get a Ural with sidecar to
better 120mph. I'll be towing the machine (being built in South Carolina)
to the Flats with Beevis (the dog that started it all.)
I had a Bug-Eyed Sprite in high school and college and really loved it.
I always wanted a big Healey and really like my 100-6, but ironically, it
was always the sound that attracted me. The big V-8 fits well and the car
handles really nicely, but it sounds like a small block V-8 -- great sound
for a VMax but sucks for a Healey. One of these days ...
