Jeff, your close. Whats happening is the cush drive on the output shaft has a ramp and cam sliding back and forth. There is a spring to help absorb shock so it doesn't act like a slide hammer and drive the middle gear out the side. With the wheel not on the ground, it can't do its job. I wouldn't do it anymore.
