You don't need a Stage 1 for Mark's system on an otherwise stock engine.
I have a Mark's 4-2 and have the following done to carbs.
1) Shim stock needles .020"
2) Open pilot screws to about 2.75-3 turns out from seated closed.
3) # 155 Mikuni main jets. (stock size is 152.5)
4) # 157.5 pilot air jet 2. (stock size is 170)
5) K&N filter element. "Y" retained but shimmed up about 1/8" with
rubber strips.
6) Always check and synch carbs every 2000 miles.
7) Replace plugs every 3000 miles to keep it sharp. My plugs look a
light tan in most riding conditions. Slow riding and they are a mid tan
color. After 1/4 mile blast they are almost white but still show a very
slight tan coloring. Incidentally my fuel mileage is virtually the same
as the stock bike with stock exhaust and carb settings, about 110 miles
till the reserve light comes on. That's based on cruising, high speed
highway and spirited traffic light use around town.

Best of all the bike pulls at least as hard as a stocker from 1500 on.
Its power comes on even smoother than a stock pipe anywhere in the RPM
range, top end power definitely stronger from V-Boost to over 9K. The
overall torque curve is even flatter than stock. Finally, the sound is
wonderful. Ever heard a Small Block Chev singing.
