Hi all-
Awhile ago I forgot my disc lock and dropped the bike. Only hurt
pride, but the rotor warped (it pinned the lock on the ground).
So I decided that rather than spending $300 for a Yamaha rotor, or
$300 for two EBC rotors, I'd go the R1 setup. I've wanted the R1
calipers anyway. I got both calipers and rotors from a junkyard.
Everything was in good shape, and the whole lot cost $260 including
shipping. Not bad. The calipers bolt right on, but the brake lines
bolt on at a different location and orientation than they do on the
Vmax calipers. Not a big deal, but the clamps that hold the lines
don't hold them in the right place anymore. I'll have to modify.
The only problem I ran into were the rotors. At first glance,
they're the same as the Vmax rotors. I mounted 'em up, but
found that the hex bolts now hit the forks. It seems that the
R1 rotors are not only a little thicker where they mount to the
rim, but there are no recesses for the bolts like there are on
the Vmax rotors.
I had a spare set of rotor bolts (from the Venture wheels I'd
previously gotten), and ground the heads down a bit. They now
work just fine. I wasn't too concerned with losing a bit of the
bolt head, as there's not a lot of torque on those bolts anyway.
But just in case, have I done something ingenious or insane?
There's over .015" gap between each of the bolts and the fork
legs. I don't think the weight difference will be significant
enough to cause a balance problem.
Thanks,
-K
(P.S. The bike stops VERY well. :-)
