Kelly, just went out to garage and my stock 86 has something like an 1/8 or
3/16 clearance to button head hex screws that attach the rotor to the wheel.
Rotors do get hot (they are the heat sink for the brake which uses friction
to convert the bikes kinetic energy to heat) but the hot part is the braking
surface of the disk. I wouldn't think there would be much expansion at the
carrier so as long as you have clearance greater than end play and run out
plus a little extra you should be OK.
I also looked at my Honda NT 650 and it has a really nice recessed screw.
As the carrier on the R-1 is thicker, is there an opportunity to
countersink the fasteners?

Snip>>>
But just in case, have I done something ingenious or insane?
There's over .015" gap between each of the bolts and the fork
legs. I don't think the weight difference will be significant
enough to cause a balance problem.

Thanks,

 -K

(P.S. The bike stops VERY well. :-)
