When I redid my motor (and bike) I ended up stripping them down, polishing them and then painting the raised ridges a flat (or gloss) black. The effect is nice and the maintenance is not high (simply clean like you would the rest of your bike. the effect has lasted the last 3 years without a problem.

Mine were turning a yellow color too. When I removed them to put my Kerker on, I noticed that the exhaust flange bolts were not tight at all. Its my opinion that this looseness is what causes the covers to dis-color. After you clean them you should warm the bike up and then crank those flange bolts down, I bet there a bit loose. The rear ones didn't change color, but those flange bolts were tight like there supposed to be.Troy

Subject: Exhaust heat guardsI have a question about the exhaust heat guards (not sure what the real name
is). The covers for the pipes leaving the block are nasty. The clear coat
has turned yellow and is peeling. What is the normal deal on this. I was
thinking about pulling then and using aircraft stripper to get the old clear
coat off and buffing them out. Any other idea on this? Thanks in advance.Steve
