I think he may have been trying to put the washer in the wrong place. The
washer goes in between the plastic piece with the "tit" on it and the
circlip on the end of the needle. In order to install the washer, you slip
the plastic washer off the needle, slide the washer on, and then slip the
plastic piece back on the needle.
When you put the needle back into the slide, be sure to rotate the needle
until you feel the little tit fall into the hole in the slide.
