Bruce,
Sorry for the tardy reply ........ However ... yes .. the Royal Star
has a rev limiter at 6250 RPM and the Royal Star Venture limiter kicks
in about 7800 RPM. Both of those bikes do have very different
transmission ratios to offset the final drive speed in relationship to
their operating range.

I had someone on the phone a couple of weeks ago for a "long" time
trying to convince me that you could go faster with the higher Venture
rear end on a stock Vmax once you got used to launching harder etc.
This may be true but I know that I could also go faster with my stock
gearing if I came out at least at 4K with my stock gearing .. as
opposed to a wimpy 3K like I normally do. If I ever hook up a staging
limiter I will probably do better as I have a terrible time trying to
hold staging RPM and watch the light too ...... Mathematically ... it
just doesn't seem like it could be true ... IMHO ... here is why .....

My last few trips to the drag strip ... my trap speed was 116.5 mph on
the time slip ... Of course this is an average of the last 60' of the
track so the bike was probably going about 120 when it crossed the 1/4
mile lights ......... Anyhow ... with stock gearing and a stock tire
.. in 4th gear I would be turning 9K at 122.12 mph ......... If I
simply put in the Venture rear end gears I would be doing only 8K at
120.47 mph ..... Soooooo .. I guess it depends how your bike is set up
... If your HP curve really bites the dust before 8K you should make
out ... but I don't think that is normally the case ....... I always
try to stay in the HP hump on the dyno and that usually runs from
about 7.5K to 9.5K if you come down equally on both sides from the
peak ....... If I shift out of 3rd at 9500 w/ stock gearing .. I fall
into forth at 7600 RPM doing 103.13 mph, (just went past the 1/8 mile
marker) ... 7600 is OK .. I am still in my hump and all I have to do
is pull as hard as I can to the finish line because I am not going to
shift again ....... If I shift out of 3rd at 9500 w/ venture gearing
.. I fall into forth at 7600 RPM doing 114.44 mph, (I am at the 1000
ft marker and am just now shifting into 4th !!). If I make it to
120.47 mph by the end of the quarter I will only be doing 8000 RPM ...
and this just doesn't seem to be good utilization of the HP curve
..... as I spend the whole time between 7600 and 8K, (OK if you peak
exactly at 8K ... if you peak higher on the dyno you are throwing HP
away that never got applied at the end of your run).

Sooooooo ... I don't know what to say ... I like having my "lower"
rear end ... If I did anything in regard to the gearing I think I
would swap out the 5th gear set to a Royal or Venture set .. so that I
could have all my 1/4 mile Wheaties .. and then shift into 5th for
those long straight line cruises where fuel economy is important
....... For the rear end swap though .. I think it really depends on
how your bike is tuned, (what RPM your HP peak is at), whether you
would benefit from the higher gearing ...... If you are at 8K or below
I think you would like it .... Of course if you tune that low ....
then you would be weaker when you shifted in the 9.5-10K range .. and
that is required in order to re-enter then next gear at 7.5K or above
... (as most curves drop off very quickly below this RPM).

IMHO as always ......
