Its probably not so much a problem with an Airstream, as it is with the =
age of the trailer. RV parks cater to big new motor coaches and 5th =
wheels and feel that any trailer over 10 years old is served and are =
just trailer trash. That might be true for most old SOB's, and it is =
hard for some to believe that an Airstream is different. I have had the =
same response when making reservations with my 31' Sovereign. But no one =
has ever questioned me once they saw it. Now I just lie when I call for =
reservations and say that have a 89 Airstream. That doesn't sound as bad =
and they couldn't tell the difference any way.=20
Clean it up, keep a neat site and you will have people stopping by to =
admire your treasure and when you tell how old it is they won't believe =
it.

Thank you for your reply , Herb , the pics were helpful .The tank came out
easy , I ended up cutting the gray drains , as it looks like they will have to
be reworked , as my bronze valve assembly is most likely unrebuildable due to
unavailable parts . Which is a shame because it is really a quality part - hate
to buy a plastic one - when all it needs is new rubber parts .
So if anyone has any comments on thetford vs valtera , quality wise and parts
availability down the road ??, is there is a particular model which might
attach to the tank fitting without reinventing that ??and how to attach grey
drains under the bw valve ??.I havnt seen any 3 " fittings that will take two
1 1/4 pipes , and to bring the front one around the 3`` pipe and tee into the
other would be a plumbers nightmare . I'm thinking time for gray tank in
between frame there ...
Any advice ,encouragement , drawings , or descriptions appreciated . Surely
I`m not the first , certainly not the last who has done this.

Your just getting a sample of why I NEVER stay in a trailer park.
At least not often. I prefer Forest Camps and State Parks. They are cheap
and care not how old your rig is. Since I own an Airstream I have a BIG
refrig and oven and a 4 burner top.
It's not uncommon for me to stay at my best Forest camp for 3-4
weeks straight. Lots to do and it's all fun.

Hello,
I stripped my 30 foot 1968 Sovereign with Bix Stripper. Paint it on in
one direction, one small panel at a time, out of the sun. Let it sit 15
to 20 min. and scrape off with a plastic putty knife. I then wipe off
the remaining residue with lacquer thinner and a rag. Do not wash it off
with water it will destroy any seals it comes in contact with. I used
3-4 gallons to complete the job, well under $200; it took about 40 hours
to complete this part of the polishing job. I had about 120 hours in the
stripping and polishing of the 30 footer the first time through. That's
stripping and polishing the unit 3 times with 3 different Rolite
products (all from airstreamdreams.com). Sounds like a lot of work but
the result is really cool looking, 30 feet of mirror!

I'm about to throw in the towl on polishing my trailer. I have
not
even tried the polisher nor used a drop of Rolite polish. I have tried
the
following 3 ways to remove clearcoat.
1. Ammonia, works on easy places but doesn't touch hard places.
2. Klean Strip Strip-X Stripper; put on with a brush and allow
to
sit 30 minutes. Dries up completely and does not work at all.
3. Klean Strip Premium Stripper in an aresol can. Spray and let
sit 10 minutes. This works pretty good. But I can get only about 15
square
feet done per $5.00 can. This will run $200.00 to do the whole trailer.
Does anyone know of a "real good" clearcoat remover that will
cost
less than $200.00 for a 23 foot trailer?
In anycase I've decided to do it different than I planned. I
will
get about 8 square feet clear of clearcoat and then polish it. I plan to
polish the door tomorrow because after using the aerosol Klean Strip
it's
clean enough to try some polishing.

I haven't received my VA yet, but if it looks anything like the one on our
1965, I made a replacement for it by cutting off the end of a 1 1/4" PVC cap

My 66 Caravel also didn't have lower rails. There were little hardware
pieces on either end of the windows, at the bottom. So when I made curtains,
I sewed elastic loops every few inches on the window side near the hem. Then
I threaded a long, thin bungee cord through them. The bungee attached to the
little hardware pieces. Great result - the curtains fit loosely enough to
get the look I wanted, but they hugged the curve of the wall.

Campground Directory. I buy one every two or three years and keep it in the
trailer. That is why I used the web to find this. I believe there is also
a version on a CD But I like to keep it handy when going down the road. It
has a great deal of worthwhile info in it.

I have stayed many times at the Green Acres Park on Main St. It is listed
under Phoenix because everything there has grown together and you can't tell

just in case you don't find it on the web. This is a rather bare bones

would write Trailer Life and Motorhome magazines and see if they would =
help educate the park owners. Trailer Life ran an article on the =
Vintage Airstreams and might be willing to help, but who knows. It =
always amazes me when I park next to a 200K coach that they want to talk =
about my Airstream and we never usually get to discussing their mansion =

I stripped and shined our 29 Ft. OL. I found the stripping not as hard a=
s getting the black off after polishing.

RJ,
I have something (else) I have found on my 57 Overlander that puzzles me. It
is located about 6" above the center of the front window above the trailer tongue.
I can't tell if it was a light or an antennae? It has two posts (the only thing
left) that are about 8" apart in a vertical position. No wires visible? Anyone
have any idea what it was used for?? It looks a little gaudy just sitting there
rusting away! Thanks.

I found a pic of the questionable rusty objects perched above the front window
of my Overlander in your archives. Vintage Airstream - '57 Sovereign I had
looked on Overlanders so decided to check others and "Bingo" on the first hit! I
guess it is a radio antenna? Wonder where the wire enters the coach? Wonder if
they are still made or if an auto antenna would work?
Thanks for your Archives. I use it quite often comparing different TTs.

The antenna stand-offs were also the lead-in feedthrough into the
trailer. Usually the lead-in cable was routed within the wall, so it
might pop-up anywhere inside the trailer.

Corn Starch to remove the mud. Mineral spirits (paint thinner) to
remove the stuff in the pits, seams and rivet heads. All done with
diaper material.
Talking about polishing, I tried out the Shirley Manning
Cyclo/Sweatshirt method of polishing 2 weekends ago, using both the
Rolite I had left over, and tried out the Nuvite S & A grades.

OK, I'm a believer now. I threw out all the foam pads I had left over
from the last polish I did, and will buy the Nuvite from here on out.
Shirley's method is so much easier that polishing was almost fun. The
sweatshirt process doesn't scratch the surface like the pads did, as
you are using a new surface each time, and using the NuVite, the
sweatshirt picked up and removed the polish mud as you go. The Rolite
must use a different base material, as it did not pick up as well -
more wiping with the diapers cloth required.
I'm going to update my polish webpage after the Spring VAC Rally next
week, but Shirley's website covers it all.

Sounds like a 40s or 50s vintage two post car radio antenna. In my '68
Caravel its on the left front corner, with a miniature communications
ball mount. I presume its wire is in the wall behind a little 4" square
of aluminum pop riveted in place. Though it might come out in the front
upper cabinet and be buried under stuff carried there. There's no radio
in my trailer yet. But there are speakers. The wire should be a coaxial
cable a little over 1/4" in diameter with a car radio antenna plug on
the end.

( it is right on the bottom state line ) there are outlets for RV parts. =

picked up awning ( no hardware ) for 30 bucks. You can get about anything
for an RV you want. You just have to keep looking around, lots and lots =

stuff just sitting in piles. We are in Florida now and sure do miss our

Thanks for the address, Tom. I went by there, and it's really an old
"trailer park" that now calls itself an RV park.
One tree, not a speck of grass. It's all crushed rock and fronts on a busy
street. Even though they want to see & approve of any unit that comes in,
there are several older Class C MH's with badly faded finishes in there.
Somewhat strange, as I see it.
You might check out the KOA east of Mesa. I always like to stay at those
places, and haven't found a bad one yet.Well, maybe Santa Maria, NM, :-).

Hey Jerry,
Yep, you guessed right, it's a radio antenna. Our '58 Overlander still
has the antenna, and from the outside, it looks like a standard
telescoping auto aerial. On the inside, there is a hole behind the
couch, towards the street side, with a rubber grommet. The cable comes
out there, and it has a connector I'm not familiar with, maybe a car
radio antenna connector. I don't know how you'd go about fishing a new
wire to hook it up, my guess is that it was probably done before the
interior skins were put on.
