I agree, it is really just familiarity.  I find the GIMP to be second
nature, and struggle with Photoshop, but that is because I have been using
the GIMP for 9 years now.  One of my favorite retorts from a Human Interface
flamewar about 12 years ago was "The only intuitive ui element is the
nipple, after that everything else is learned."
