Does Safe Mode consistently work? You report that it worked at least
once, but was that just random luck?

1) If so, then the VM crash reason might be debuggable using a
mini-dump (if one was created in the VM).
It's not trivial to do so, but also not too hard:

- Enable mini-dumps (on the source host), aka "Small memory dump":
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315263

- Re-copy to target netbook host, and attempt boot.

- Extract any mini-dump from the netbook by copying the VDI back to
the source host and mounting the VDI as a second hard-disk drive (or
using Linux Live CDs or similar...)
Mini-dump will be in E:\Windows\Minidump folder (assuming that
registry MinidumpDir value is %SystemRoot%\Minidump)

- Use instructions here:
http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/window-on-windows/how-do-i-use-windbg-debugger-to-troubleshoot-a-blue-screen-of-death/1922
(I think these work, otherwise Google for "windbg minidump" or ask back here.)

- Hopefully windbg gives a "Probably caused by" line, which may help
identify what is causing the crash.
It may be that program relates to a driver or service or installed
program that can be removed?

2) Is the netbook otherwise stable and reliable? Perhaps run some
memory or hardware diagnostics on it if you are not sure.
