Did that - but the same pattern set in. In despair, I copied the whole 4.1.14 .VirtualBox directory over, and ran that with V'Box 4.2RC3. It ran perfectly - the first time. But - as at first a few days ago - repeated tries caused the never- ending re-booting cycles, ie. just as the WinXP user desktop is due to appear, the VM goes into a reboot. What on earth could cause that? Sometimes I see a WinXP failure, inviting me to try in Safe Mode, which works, but not subsequently. I've tried all the combinations I and you can think of, and am just out of any other to try. I'm coming to the conclusion that I shall just have to do without V'Box on the netbook. It's not a showstopper, but it's the only one of my regular app's that will not work, and I don't like giving up! Many thaks for your help, Mark and Matthias. Much appreciated...
