In virtualbox, add a new hard drive to some guest OS.  Login to the guest OS, 
and you discover the new device, /dev/sdb
mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdb
Simple as that.  Filesystem directly on the raw device.  No fdisk or gparted.

In fact, there's an often-encountered limitation of partitioning.  The 2TB 
barrier.  Some partition schemes can handle it, some can't.  But why bother 
figuring it out?
