Thanks to all that replied.

In the end, the hosthey+d worked in three of my virtual images so far.
In one, I had become so exasperated that I deleted the CD drive from
storage. It complained of that, I added an empty CD drive, and it worked
fine afterwards (WindowsXP guest).
In another, it complained that the files being loaded were older than the
files in the guest - I said yes anyway, and it failed. Rebooted the guest,
ran the guest additions install again, and all was fine (WindowsXP guest).
In the third, there were no difficulties (a Windows7 guest).

It had to have been a short circuit between the chair and the keyboard.

Thanks again - I'll use the hostkey+d hence-forth.

On my Mac I just go to the VBox menu item Devices and choose install Guest
Additions. That's all there is to it. It already knows where the ISO is.
Just follow the prompts as it runs.
