Regarding the 16 colors, you might check the memory setting in the VBox setup 
for your guest as well as checking which video adapter NT thinks you have. I 
could be wrong, but I suspect that you should get at least 250 colors even 
without the Guest Additions. With them I get 32 bit video (16.000,000 colors) 
in WinXP.

Have you read the manual Chapter 4? That will answer your question regarding 
Guest Additions. 

Have you installed the VBox Extension Pack? Most people find that useful 
especially since it is required to get USB 2.0 support.
