I installed a backport, so now running version 4.3.18. Incidentally,
when I go to Help, About Virtual Box, it looks like the display of the
version is more than 16 colors.

Yes, I thought the memory rather small and so I upped it to 512 Mb

I managed to get 256 colors by installing the guest additions. This was
a pain because the VB manual was no help at all and I had to stumble my
way through it. 

Only problem now is with a game: no sound.
