I have just upgraded to VirtualBox 2.2.2. I'm having various troubles
with USB so I decided to create a brand new, pristine, Windows XP Home
installation.

The installation went fine, no problems at all, but the USB doesn't
work. USB devices on other guests on the same virtual host are
working OK so I'm pretty sure it's not a permission problem or
anything like that. (My USB problems relate to adding new devices)

I get an error before I even try and connect any actual USB devices.
If I look in Device Manager I see:-

    Universal Serial Bus Controllers
        Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
        USB Root Hub

Which is OK, no problems, but I *also* get another entry:-

    Other Devices
        Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller

This one fails to install correctly and has the dreaded yellow !
beside it.

What's going on? I've not had this sort of problem before. Why am I
getting that unwanted/unnecessary extra USB controller? If I
uninstall it then the next time I boot the XP guest it tries to
install it again and fails.

In addition the XP guest doesn't 'see' any USB devices that I capture.

Aaarrrggghhh!!! This is getting ridiculous, I'm going steadily
backwards.
