Hi Shawn,

Thanks for offering to chip in! There's a bunch of people on the Velocity dev list but only one regularly active committer (me, and not as much as I'd like). I'm hoping that will increase. Have you read this?
http://wiki.apache.org/jakarta-velocity/GettingYourPatchCommitted

Here's one place to start. There's lots of bugs in the bug list but few patches. Pick one and gnaw at it. When you have something useful, attach a patch to the bugzilla issue. Make sure that "ant test" runs smoothly, and if applicable add a new test. If it's an obvious problem and the fix obviously solves, and "ant test" works I'll commit it ASAP. (If it's less obvious and needs to be verified by others it may take a little longer). If for some reason I miss the issue, edit the "IssuePriorities" page on the Wiki and send an email to the dev list.

Another place to start is documentation. The Wiki is a great place to put new tutorials and examples.

Once we make a significant dent in the bug list, it'll be time to issue Velocity 1.5. There's a bunch of new features already present (decimal numbers, maps, allowing returns within directives). There's two more I'd like to get in (extended event handlers and some upgrades to the Introspector) but we really need to resolve some of the obscure bugs before we release. If you can do anything to help it will speed that along.

If you have any questions or thoughts write to the dev list and we'll all be glad to help you.

Best, WILL

Subject: wanting to join the team

I have just recently started using velocity 1.4 as a great way to make templates for dynamic pages in a webapp I am writing at work. I have been impressed. There are a few things I would like to see, most of which seem to have been discussed heavily over the past couple of years.

I would like to join the team and see if I can help out. I got the impression that the project was dead, but it seems that it has sprung back to life over the past few months.

My background....I have been developing for ~10 years in Objective-c, c, and exclusively java for the past 5 years. Mostly j2ee web applications.

Currently, I am a Sr web developer at Pennwell publishing in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Let me know where I can pitch in, docs to read to get me up to speed on contributing fixes, new code, testing, etc. I am digging around the website.

Regards,
Shawn McDermott
