Subject: Re: sucrose for peds

If you are referring to using sugar orally...

An age old teething practice was called a "sugar-tit." It is a sugar
cube placed in the center of a handkerchief, then the hankie is gathered
around the sugar cube sticking out---hence --the "tit". This was
oftenthen dipped quickly in brandy or other alcohol. It also worked
without the alcohol per my great-aunt, but the alcohol really "put the
little bugger out."

I have heard of pediatricians using a squirt of glucose jelly in the
mouth during injections. Not sure if it's the distraction or the
glucose, but some swear by it.

Last night I started a 6-week-old in ER. They'd given her sucrose which
they claim calms babies (children?) and reduces pain. She was calm, but
also sick so we weren't sure which was the reason. The MD claimed this
is a fairly common thing now.

Any of you using this? Thanks!
