AACN has a number of certifications they offer (CCRN, PCCN ,CMC etc.) and your certification is good for 3 years. Every 3 years you either take the test or you submit the required number of CERP's .  The CERP's can be from articles you read or seminars you attend.  They even give you CERP's for being on committees and teaching.
