Just wanted to pop in and resurrect this squashed, bloody thread to make a comment.
First of all, no disrespect to Jimmy, who I admire greatly as a community contributor, a family man, and a tribute to Texas. That said, I think Jimmy is way off-base with his reply. I need to respond to that in order to not advance his notion that this thread is an attempt to gather free material for some sort of fictional fly fishing anthology. Not replying would reinforce a falsehood, and imply that I have gone to slink away and lick my wounds. B.S. I was really looking forward to a fun discussion! Seems like everybody does more tying shows than I do, and I like attending these things when I can, just because they are fun, fly fishing events. Sowbug is a heck of a long way from here, and a very expensive trip. So this list is the way I will continue to know and experience you folks. But instead of getting some entertainment value for VFB, and tapping into the experiences of the many old timers who have done a lot of these shows, a lister takes the opportunity to act like VFB traffic cop and smashes the thread. And this someone has made a great deal of his reputation in fly fishing circles perched on the shoulders of others' fly fishing quotes...go figure. Hey, I love stories, and the way people tell them. Allan's contribution was a hoot. I would have love to have seen his casting pond story in real life. I don't have much to offer, except to say my favorite two events of all time were Mike Lawson's Spring Creek presentation in the theater, and Lefty Kreh's famous casting demo. Then there was the guy in California who had set up a Common Cents testing station (think that is what it's called, but anyway...), one of those deals where you bring your rod in, and he uses the system to find out what the rod's true line rating is. Great idea, but nobody brings their own rod to a fly fishing expo? So, just a story lover here, someone wanting to be inspired by the prospects of doing more tying demos, but not an anthology (or even a fly web page) existing or in mind. I love VFB and have been with it a very long time. But I am saddened that this year, at this time, the traffic and postings are as quiet as I have ever seen them. New blood and new discussions are needed to preserve this community. What occurred with this thread is a symptom of some broader problems, IMHO.
