I actually still have my dads old Penn reels, that we used on the beach in New Jersey.
He took some bambo sanded them down and used electrical tape for the handles. Used hose clamps to hold the reel and used tape for the guides. We had 8' 10' and 12' rods. Don't know what ever happened to them. This is the way that I was taught and the way that fly rods and reels were set up to be used by right-handed people at least back in the 50s when I learned to fly fish.
