Alan: The blind eye tapered shank hook is used merely to hold the tube when one applies the dressing to the tube. It is not used to fish the tube. I have tied a lot of tubes and started by cutting the eye off a large salmon hook and then jamming the tube onto the remaining shank. One needs two or three different sized salmon hooks to do this, dependant upon the size of tube that you are tying. I now use either the HMH tube fly tool or the similar Eumer tool. For fishing, I generally use an Owner single hook, the eye of the hook going inserted into a short piece of silicon or vinyl tube which is placed at the hook end of the dressed tube. I think i did a poor explanation of the blind eye hook. The blind eye hooks have tapered shanks, so you just push the hook up the shank till it jams. If you want to rotate the fly to access the other side just twist tube round the shank. Do you use that type of hook so it slips into the tube easier. Seems like it would be difficult to change flies while out fishing unless you lash the tippet to many hooks at home and use a loop to loop to connect them after you attach a tube. Or am I way out in left field? I am more into lake fishing for trout and large and small mouthed bass and crappie. I sure do appreciate the advise on the tubes.
