Just make sure that embroidery thread isn't cotton. You will probably have to use something like Danville, Uni, or Wapsi (UTC) 210 denier since Gudebrod G was between 270 and 303 denier. Wapsi also makes a 280 denier, and just so happens to be made from polyester, the same as Gudebrod. The others are nylon. Does it make a difference? Buy one of each and decide for yourself. My two favorites for Gudebrod alternatives are Hook and Hackle's Euro threads and the new Veevus thread. Both are made of polyester, but they also come in very fine sizes only.
Gudebrod was the supplier for Orvis' thread, but since they went out of business there is no telling who makes their thread now. Since Al mentioned Orvis I checked their website and they do carry their thread in a size G. For $2 it wouldn't hurt to check it out.
