I display my flies at my tying station with the Electric clips mounted on a
board with holes that is part of my tying station. I use the mini clips. Yes
they are great for holding flies.I was told today by my therapist who is a
shooter that he gets his ear plugs from Harbor Freight. He buys them by a box
of 1000.. He says they are the same as the poppers I posted on Facebook. That
is what I used for the Popper Swap.Tony

Tony: I’ll have to try those electrical hooks as I bought a dozen of them a
while back when tying the poppers for the swap as they make GREAT holders while
painting the popper heads and waiting for it to dry while I’m waiting to put on
the next coat, or the final clear coats. Well, I guess I change my mind more
than most women LOL.. Last night, I had not hit the “order button” yet as I
couldn’t order it till this morning after 6am. So, I took the two sets of
swivel hackle pliers off and added more beetle and spider foam bodies. Then,
after thinking about it again at about 3 in the am, I re-added the pliers back
to the order and also added a spider body foam “cutter” to the order as I tie
those flies all the time and never can make them look decent by cutting the
foam by hand LOL... So, I went over the budget my wife gave me to spend, but I
reminded her about how many fish she catches with those spider patterns, beetle
patterns, and ant patterns, as I use about the same shape for all three LOL..
It did the trick and she ain’t mad at me after all. Not if I tie her a bunch
of good fish catching flies anyway LOL... I’ll have to try spiders with hot
pink and copper colored bodies and see they catch fish as well as the Chili
Pepper and the PPP fly do for us. One thing about a fish is that you never know
until you try. Oh, and talking about going over budget on things, we JUST last
week had a brand new, Harbor Freight super store open here about 15 miles from
our house. I’d love to go in there with a wad of cash LOL... Chuck From:

[email protected] Subject: Re: [VFB] Rotary Hackle Pliers?? Nev,I also
used the Electrical hooks and they work fine just like a good pair of pliers. I
wrap my Parachutes a bit different than normal. What I find I can hold the arm
vertical while the pliers is alt an angle. I can work the hackle down under the
upper wrap then over the hook shank and dip back under the wrap with a up and
down motion. It just works well for me. I found I have more control with the
hinge pliers than I have with the fixed pliers. The beauty of it all is we can
do what works best for us.Tony

Hmm! you have a good point there Tony. I never thought of that. Perhaps that is
the reason I bought the rotary hinged type in the first place. ☺️ I tie
parachutes once in a while, but can't remember what hackle pliers I use. My go
to hackle pliers are the electrical style as long as they have a ring to hold
or put your finger in. They grip the hackle well. Next time I tie some
parachute hackled flies I will remember to use the rotary pliers. Nev

vise is useless for winding parachute hackles. The swivel hackle pliers is the
way to go on them. That is all I have used for about 25 years. The long handle
one is the best for that. I can show what I mean at the show., Gee now I am
picking on you. LOL I am in a good mood this morning. BTW, the poppers are
finished and you can pick them up at the Sowbug. Tony

Well, since Allan reminded me that since I have a rotary vise, in theory
I already have rotating hackle pliers, and since I hadn’t actually hit the
“order” button, I just deleted the pliers and jacked up the number of foam
spider bodies I ordered which I KNOW I use all the time LOL.. Chuck From:

I can't help but laugh, we have been delicately trying to tell you not to
bother because we hardly ever use rotary hackle pliers, but you bought both
sizes anyhow. Oh, I'm still laughing 😃 Neville (Nev) Gosling

went ahead and ordered two pair as one has a short handle of about 1 1/2” I

end of the handle. Guess it’s the only way I can find out of they are my cup of
tea or not. My Daddy did a lot of mechanic work his whole life and he used to
tell me “Son, you can’t have too many tools” LOL.. Guess I’ll find out if he
was right. In my mechanics tool box and my tool shed, most tools I own I hardly
ever use , but when I need them I REALLY need them. Thanks to all, Chuck

some, rarely use them, but don't usually use this kind of hackle pliers tip as
I find it breaks the hackle more often than the standard pliers tips that come
together. I think it is just a matter of preference. On Thu, Mar 12, 2015

wanted to try a pair of Rotary Hackle Pliers. Do they work good?? Are they
better than regular hackle pliers. Only problem I foresee is that after you
wrap the hackle, those rotary pliers will hang down a lot farther than normal
hackle pliers, making getting your lock in thread wraps behind the hackle would
be harder to do than using reg. hackle pliers. Am I missing something there??
Thanks for any pros or cons. They are only $3.45 from Stockard, which is the
place I’m ordering from, but if I’ll never use them, that’s $3.45 I could use
on something I will use. Chuck
