A bead headed Twist Nymph is a must for me when fishing stillwater. I've also had really good luck with his beetle pattern (you can see it) and his Halo Emerger is the first emerger I look for when the PMDs are hatching. When my son was 11 or 12 and just started fishing, he caught lots of fish on a diving caddis. This is a great fly for a beginner because you can't fish it wrong. I just read his book "Theory of Attraction" for the third or fourth time. I'm in the process of tying six different version of the double wing. I'm going to put them in a box with a label for the proper light conditions this summer and give this theory a shot this summer. Some day, I'm going to spend an entire summer fishing only Lafontaine patterns.
