John,

The formal (CIPS rules) casting tournaments I used to participate in
have as Event #6 Fly Singlehand Distance. Approx 50' (had to measure
between 15 and 15.5m in length, no longer, no shorter) shooting head,
followed by a mono running line. The weight of this shooting head was
not to exceed 42 grams. Rod length not regulated, but 9' was
considered optimal length, and pretty much standard length for
everyone.

I do not know exactly what the current distance record is, but it is
in excess of 235'. Well past my own personal best cast of 66.99m
(219'), which if I am truthful was again well past my second best
ever cast. I guess all the stars were in line that particular day ;-)

The 161' cast by Joan Wulff you referred to would have been with
similar tackle, except that lines for ladies would not exceed 38
grams in weight.

The 90-110' casts, referred to in the second part of your message
most likely are different rules casts, almost certainly with regular
rods/lines. For example the Best of the West tournament finals held
last year at a Denver FF show had as the winning cast a whopping
124'!

Please note that this was with a 9' Loomis Trilogy, 5wt SciAng XXD
longbelly line, and cast in no-wind indoors conditions. This is one
heck of a long cast!!!

Cheers,
Hans
