Wow! 70 yards equals 210 feet. So with a typical 100 ft fly line, he has to
keep that line flying straight out while pulling out over 100 feet of
backing. Now, that is a cast!

I have yet to cast a 100 ft line into its backing. My own personal best is
about 95 feet with an 8 wt. rod. Nothing to brag about, and it has only
happened once. Somehow, in the midst of all of my bad habits, something went
right. I suspect most of my long casts ( in stillwater) get out around 60-80
or so. River fishing I seldom have need to cast more than 50. So goal posts
(or world records) are in no danger from me!

I have noticed that when I am working REALLY hard, my casting suffers. When
I relax and let the rod do the work it is amazing how far that line can soar.
Kind of like golfing, I guess.
