Same thing happened to me- sort of.
Fishing in Pensacola, spotted a bobber going by fast and fairly close,
bobbing up and down as it went.
Cast a charlie just in front, let it sink a second, snagged the line just
below the bobber.
Attached at the bottom end was a nice speckled trout, which I proceeded to
land.

I saw, I cast, I hooked,
I reeled in and landed and released.  And he had never been caught as of
yet, officially.
He was legally hooked in the mouth, but by a bait hook.

Legal catch?
