Don't waste your time with a 5wt. in the Saltwater. it isn't built for the Ocean. It's a trout Stick. I use 7wt. & 8wt. for all my Surf Flyfishing. There are some guys who claim to use a 6 wt. in the Local Surf, but it would have to be under extremely rare Ideal conditions... As Jerry states, the wind will shut you down FAST!!! Also as Jerry states, if you hook into a Big One, your in Big Trouble. If you want to fish in the Saltwater, use Gear that is made for the Saltwater....7 wts. & Up. It's the same thing as the folks who fish a 0wt.or 1wt. for 8 pound Brown Trout. Your fighting the fish too long on too lite of gear... Match the Gear to the species & expected size of fish, You'll still have alot of fun, but you'll be able to handle what your hooking up on...
