Hey Del & Doyle-
Since I started the thread I thought I would reply to
Del and say to Doyle that he's sure welcome to join
in. My feeling is if I send an open post to the list
anyone is welcome to chime in, so feel free.
Dave sent a post mentioning Dee and Spey flies which
are also flatwing style flies. Dee flies have wings
which look like a slightly open pair of scissors swept
back along the shank, sort of like a swept wing
fighter plane. Spey flies have the wings closed and
sort of "tent" the fly. They're flatwings in that they
don't rise up at an angle to the shank.
The ones I had mentioned and that Deborah replied on
are flies that were originally tied for east Coast
striper fishing. They consist of long hackles for tail
and wing, with the addition of bucktail and some small
amounts of synthetic materials for flash. The hackles
aren't tied in pairs, but are tied on top of the shank
and impart a lifelike motion to the fly. The style
also depends on blending colors to get a more natural
appearance. There's an article in the latest
(December) issue of Fly Fisherman magazine and another
cover story on them was done in the 2001 Summer issue
of Fly Tying magazine. The flies are very very
beautiful and as far as I'm concerned as pretty as
full dressed salmon flies in a more subtle way.

You passers-by, who share my journey,
You move and change,I move and am the same;
You move and are gone, I move and remain.
