Okay, this is an offshoot of the hackle question posed earlier... Someone mentioned something along the lines of, "if you tie your flies to fish and not display, you can always trim the hackle to the size you need after wrapping".
Is it true that trimming hackle in this fashion doesn't matter as far as "fly performance"? The reason I ask is that, from an economic standpoint, I'd much rather buy saddles than necks...but I have found that as my dry flies get smaller, my saddle hackle fibers wind up being too long; hence require trimming in order to work right.
